Dust Mite Pillow Cover
If you are an allergy sufferer, do you know whether you are allergic to dust mites? May people are but do not
know it. Every house has dust mites both in the beds and in the carpets, because they feed on dead skin. The
numbers of dust mites in your bed can build up very quickly, so a dust mite pillow cover and a dust mite proof
mattress encasing will keep the allergens down and reduce the health hazard.

Dust mites, also called house dust mites are common the world over and there are several common species. The
mites are just under a half-millimetre in length and bluish in colour. The male will live for 10-19 days, but a
pregnant female can last for up to 70 days.
All this time, they are shedding skin and faeces. Their stomachs contain irritants which help them digest their
food, but it an allergen to many people causing respiratory problems such as wheezing and asthma.
In its life, a single dust mite can leave 4,000-5,000 allergy-causing particles in your bed and your carpets, so
imagine having thousands of them in your home or bed.
House dust mites are happy in a bed but often they prefer to infest the pillow because your breath provides a
little moisture. This is a particular problem if you are allergic, because they are right next to your nose
allowing you to suck their waste in to your lungs, if you are not using a dust mite pillow cover or dust mite proof
pillow itself.
An allergy proof mattress and a dust mite pillow cover will help reduce allergy sufferers' allergic reactions to
the detritus given off by dust mites. The dust mites in your bed will shed skins and other waste materials
themselves. This is microscopic - like dust - but it irritates a lot of people if it is inhaled.
It is possible that dust mite detritus can be a cause of allergic asthma. If this is your problem, then dust
mite allergy mattress and pillow covers will alleviate your problem. They work by preventing dust mites from
getting between the sheets where you sleep, because the weft and the weave of the material is too fine for them to
pass through.
Some dust mite allergy mattress encasements and dust mite pillow covers may contain an insecticide too, which
hopefully will not be strong enough to affect you. If you are allergic to pesticides too, this is something to
check up on.
The solution is to wash your bedding regularly, say, weekly, in boiling water and to use dust mite allergy proof
mattress and pillow covers. These covers or encasements are not expensive and if you travel a lot, you can take
them with you for use in hotel beds as well.
A fine anti-allergy mattress and box spring encasement and a dust mite pillow cover will also reduce the chance
of your being bitten by bed bugs and fleas. The problem is that people and especially young people are becoming
more and more sensitive to allergies and the number of insects is increasing because of the changing climate.
The warmer winters are not killing them off and the damper summers are encouraging them to breed more creating
higher incidents of this indoor allergy.
